UNIFEM/IWRAW Asia-Pacific Internet Working Group to Elimintae Discrimination Against Women Using CEDAW.

1999 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). During the past 20 years, women's human rights advocates have learned critical lessons in successfully implementing the Convention, and using it to end discrimination against women.

UNIFEM and the International Women's Rights Action Watch (IWRAW) Asia-Pacific are hosting an Internet Working Group, CEDAW-in-action, to support women's human rights advocates and others in sharing experience and knowledge on implementing CEDAW.

This Working Group is a response to requests for such a venue to discuss CEDAW, which have come from: the annual UNIFEM/IWRAW Asia-Pacific "Global to Local" training on the Convention; the End-violence Working Group contributions on CEDAW and violence; and the booklet developed by UNIFEM, "Bringing Equality Home." The booklet documents success stories of ways women's NGOs have used CEDAW to help change legislation, achieve court victories, and influence governmental policy. Cases, information and insights from the Working Group will contribute to the next edition of "Bringing Equality Home."

The Working Group, which runs from 11 February to 30 April, 1999, provides an opportunity to build a global information exchange for advocates working with CEDAW. It will:

Join the CEDAW-in-action Working Group! Don't miss this opportunity to share information, exchange strategies, and have input into the UN Beijing+5 Meeting evaluating implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action!

We extend a special invitation to the participants of the annual UNIFEM/IWRAW Asia-Pacific CEDAW "Global to Local" Training Workshop and the End-violence Working Group. We hope you will share your experiences!
