Looking Beyond Beijing Regional Forum Proceedings

Looking Beyond Beijing Regional Forum (July 30 - August 1, 1996) was held for women to discuss the development of the women's movement in the Asia-Pacific vis-a-vis global and regional social and economic trends. The forum was attended by women from regional organizations and national groups.

The two broad themes discussed during the forum were:

Key speakers included Irene Fernandez (Teganita), Vanessa Griffin (APDC-GAD), Siriporn Skrobanek (GAATW), Fatima Burnad (SRED) and Raquel Edralin-Tiglao (WCC).

Focused-group discussions were held on women and democracy/women's political participation, labour and migration, and violence against women. During the in-depth discussion, emerging challenges to and changes in the women's movement were identified.

task forces were then organized to come up with action plans and strategies for addressing the issues and challenges set forth in the focused-group discussion. the action plans were made up of four components: purpose anf functins of the task forces; composition, focus and objectives; mechanisms/functioning; and monitoring/accountability.
