Son Pon Nim, 68, was 17 years old when she and ten other girls from her village left for what they thought were jobs in Japan. She ended up in Raboul, then New Guinea, Borneo, where she was forced to serve 20 to 30 soldiers a day. She was treated for syphilis, malaria and ovarian cancer, for which doctors removed her ovaries. These days she has no happiness because she is in constant pain and cannot move around well. She did marry upon returning to Korea but worried that her husband would discover her past. She hated having intercourse with her husband. She discovered the Protestant religion a few years ago and prays twice a day for her health. go back to photos
