On August 31 1999, over 700 women from 44 countries in the Asia Pacific region came together for the Asia Pacific Regional Meeting of Non-Government Organisations in preparation for Beijing plus Five, or Women 200 - the special meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to evaluate the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA) to be held in New York in June 2000.
A major task from the meeting was to produce an evaluation of the implementation of the BPFA in the region. The report will form the basis of our in put into the High Level Government Meeting of the Economic and Social Council of the Asia Pacific, the United Nations Regional body. It will also be taken to the meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York, March 2000. The more groups and individuals who endorse the document, the stronger our voices will be.
The Report is divided into two sections.
Section A is the official conference outcome and evaluation of the BPFA.
Section B are the outcomes of various special interest groups held at the conference, and while not part of the official report, were considered by participant as important enough for inclusion in the report.
