The University of the Philippines was one of the first universities in the Philippines to offer a Women's Studies Program. Playing the lead role in this development is the the College Social Work and Community Development, which in 1991 started to offer a Master of Arts Program in Women and Development. As a training college for community development practitioners and social service workers for both the goverment and non-government sectors, the CSWCD played a crucial role in mainstreaming gender awareness and gender-fair practices in these sectors. Its Library which houses a sizeable collection of women's resource has become a hub of women's studies scholars and activists in and outside the University Philippines, the Philippines' premier state university.
The UP,CSWCD also played a key role in the establishment of the University Center for Women's Studies, one of the first of its kind in the Philippines. The Center for Women's Studies conducts out-of-campus training on gender awareness and women's issues, and is known for its highly critical publication, The Review on Women's Studies.
