Asia Japan Women's Resource Center (AJWRC) Japan

The Asia-Japan Women's Resource Center (AJWRC) was formed only in 1995. However, its foundations are firmly rooted in the Asian Women's Association (AWA), a pioneer since the 1970s in the development of a strong gender and North-South perspective within the Japanese progressive mass movements in general, and the women's movement in particular. The founding of AJWRC is a response to the challenge of creating an alternative society for the 21st century: a society that is based on gender justice, ecological sustainability, as well as local and global democracy.

AJWRC's strong internationalist "Asian perspective" is grounded on its analysis of Japan's role as a regional and global economic giant, and how such a role impacts on women all over Asia. Japan is not only the largest importer of raw materials from other Asian countries, but it is also the destination of the largest number of Asian women who are victimized by trafficking. AJWRC believes that the affluent lifestyle of Japanese society is realized at the expence of peoples in Asia.

Concretely, AJWRC works to raise Japanese women's consciousness and to enhance their collective action through sharing of information and experience among themselves, and with other women and marginalized sectors in Asia. AJWRC has an extensive resource collection, many of which are unpublished, on issues such as feminism, women's human rights, women in development, women and the environment, violence against women in war and situations of armed conflict, and women's international cooperation. Aside from its regular publication, other activities of AJWRC include researches, trainings and conferences. It is also active in various global and regional movements promoting international cooperation and solidarity.
